These include all the inner shoulds, musts, and have-tos, Rick Hanson, Ph.D., writes onPsychology Today. Like I must not look bad. Did she want it on my mind all hours of the day and night? Probably not.Some pressure was very real- I did need to process invoices and pay rent. But for some real tasks, I adde d fake stress by expecting perfection. For example Present a foolproof content strategy. The only person in the office who expected perfection wasme- so why put that pressure on myself?And writing a hit song on my guitar? Creating that pressure was a quick way to kill one of my favorite hobbies.And then there was the straight-up fake pressure- Im looking at you, Have an upbeat positive vibe all the time. Sure, thatd be nice, but its not realistic to think I canoperate on one emotionevery single day. Im not Siri.When I finished the exercise, I wish I could say that I suddenly felt zero pressure and as free as a woman in a disposable razor commercial, acting as if shes wearing shorts for the first time in her adult life. But we cant fully get rid of pressure or stress. You feel compelled to write one because the career books, career counselors, and HR managers tell you that’s what you are supposed to do. If you don’t do it, then you failed to show professional courtesy. If you do send one, it is rarely the defining factor that gets you the job. Furthermore, they all sound alike. Yawn.Instead of the traditional boring thank-you letter, let’s hit a grand-slam home run with follow-up strategies that tip the scale in your favor. I refer to these as “value-added responses.” They can be used after the interview or after other ongoing correspondence with targeted opportunities.Send a Value-Added Response: Within 48 hours after an interview, follow up with a value-added response. Do not write a thank-you letter or an email that just restates your qualifications. Instead, provide something unique that dramatically sets you apart from others. Here’s how: foc us on a topic discussed in your interview, and then provide your prospective boss with additional information on that topic. Here are a few examples that illustrate what I mean:One of my clients had a great interview for a senior sales leadership position. During the interview, his potential boss discussed how the sales people were not successfully selling to C-level executives. I had my client follow up by sending his potential boss a book on C-level selling strategies. His value-added response note looked like this (abbreviated):“Dear Joe, I enjoyed our discussions yesterday on the sales position and the challenges of selling to C-level executives. Here is a book I recommend to help overcome the selling problem. You might want to pass it among your sales execs. It’s guaranteed; your innovative and unique value-added response can be the edge that gets you the job.Maintain Ongoing Contact: Call, write or personally visit your potential boss once a week with a value-added benefit. Do this until you land the job or they tell you the position has been filled. Some career strategists think this is overkill, but my client track record of success teaches that persistence pays off. At the very least, you will usually learn where you stand.Future Opportunities: If you are turned down, write a very cordial thank-you note to HR and, more importantly, to the person who interviewed you. Thank them for their time and consideration. Indicate that you would appreciate being looked at for other opportunities. If you are really interested in the position or company, follow up in a month with an inquiry about other opportunities that may have recently opened up. Don’t rely on the company to get back to you. Even though you were turned down, you may have be en “number two,” and they will be eager to have you interview for another position.Whatever happens, don’t get discouraged. Sales Is Not an Easy Job An erroneous and commonly held belief is that sales professionals spend more time on the golf course than in a boardroom. While many sales professionals do spend time entertaining clients on golf courses, that time is earned time. Unless a sales professional is playing hooky and shrugging off their responsibilities to spend a day on the lynx, time golfing (or any other form of entertainment) comes only after a lot of work and usually only as part of a sales cycle. Sales is a tough job. If you are considering a sales job, you must first understand that you will be expected to work very hard, long hours before you can earn some of the privileges of being in sales. Not only will your employer demand hard work from you, your clients, too will expect that you are dedicated and committed to delivering on your every promise. Doing so takes hard work. Handling Rejection Many people have a hard time dealing with rejection. For those in the sales industry, rejection is part of the job. Consider an inside sales professional who is charged with making 50 calls per day. The average inside rep needs to make 25 calls before reaching someone who is interested in learning more about the product or service the sales professional represents. That means 24 rejections before success. If you have issues or challenges with being rejected, you will either need to learn how to deal with rejection or consider a different industry. Having a Strong Internal Drive Many sales positions offer plenty of autonomy. That means that much of your business day will be up to you as to how the hours are spent. Without strong, internal motivation and drive, those hours may not serve you well in your quest for success. How a Book's Dramatic Rights Get Sold How a Book's Dramatic Rights Get Sold You know the names of todays richest writers: J.K. Rowling, Stephen King, Dan Brown. There are a few other names but the list is short and none of them got really rich by publishing their novels. They got really rich when the subsidiary rights were sold. Books are often the source material for movies, television shows,  and stage plays and, like all subsidiary rights sales, film and TV rights sales represent additional income and exposure for the book they are based upon. How Its Done One crucial point is that the author, not the publishing house, almost always owns the subsidiary rights. And that includes the so-called dramatic rights. Nevertheless, the publisher may arrange for the sale of the dramatic rights. Dramatic rights agents like Holly Frederick have the highly specialized job of arranging the sale of a books film, TV, or stage rights for adaptation. Frederick works exclusively with authors whose books are published by Curtis Brown.   At Curtis Brown, we refer to my type of role as that of a secondary agent, she said. What I mean by that is that Im not involved in that primary publishing deal - its the primary agents who sign the clients and sell the clients work to the publisher. I get involved with the book once its been sold to a publisher and is - literally! - walked down that long hallway by my primary agent colleague into the back office. Not every book published by Curtis Brown makes it down the hall to her desk. Of course, youre going to take cookbooks and cholesterol diet books out of the equation. But even after that, not every book is going to be a film, not every book is going to be a TV show. Thats where my expertise comes in, she said. So, her first task is to select the books that are suitable for a dramatic rights sale. The Winnowing Process At the start, its a readers job. If youve ever read a book, finished it, and put it down on your lap and said, That would make a great movie! then you know a bit about what its like to do my job, Frederick says. Of course, its more nuanced than that. You have to keep close tabs on the market, you have to know what the marketplace is looking for, And you have to know the potential buyers. There are at least a zillion people in Hollywood who call themselves producers these days, she said. My job is largely about knowing the right producer for the right piece of material, whether a piece of material is best adapted for series television, for long-form television, for a feature film, or for the stage. And then you have to know what the marketplace will support. For every 10 books that we sell here, I can probably put aside nine because theyre not right for the marketplace. No Boy Wizards! Timing is everything in pitching dramatic rights. Frederick says she cant sell anything featuring a vampire or a boy wizard these days. The market for them is totally saturated. Dystopian and post-apocalyptic stories are really tough to sell lately, too. And that means some really good stories wont make it to the screen, at least not in the near future. I have wonderful, wonderful books on my shelf that Im just not able to find buyers for at this moment because the book hit the marketplace at the wrong time, she says. Sale of a books dramatic rights doesnt mean instant millions. That movie might never get made, or if it does it could flop. But the sale helps in other ways, Frederick notes. Even a modest success means additional book sales. And the dramatic rights sale increases interest from foreign publishers, who will be more interested in taking on a book that might be dramatized.

It’s a time-tested strategy that’s been shared by many successful people.Gary Keller and Jay Papasan even wrote a  whole book  about this simple idea. But don’t let the simplicity of this idea fool you. It’s one of the hardest things to implement in your life.Last year, I published an article about focusing on one thing called “The Power Of Compounding.” I’ve received dozens of questions about it like, “I get the idea. But I struggle with putting it into practice.”Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!  That’s because we, human beings, are fickle. Our desires are constantly changing. We pursue new things before we finish our old goals.We’re dealing with an invisible force that is always trying to confuse us. Instead of focusing on one thing at a time, we set mult iple goals, and think we can multitask ourselves to achieving them.There’s a discrepancy between  what we know  ( to focus on one thing at a time) and  what we do  (focusing on everything at the same time).The question is not whether focusing on one thing is a good strategy (just look at the image at the top of this article); it’s HOW can we stick to it? In this article, I share how I apply this strategy to my life. But first, let’s define the “One Thing” strategy.One thing per AREA of your lifeToo often people assume that you should only focus on one thing in your life, period. But that’s not what this strategy is about. It’s about being smart about what you pursue. Yes, you can achieve a lot of things…But just not at the same time.You can’t build a career, get in shape, compete in marathons, write a book, invest in business, get kids,  and  travel the world. But you  can  do all those things in a lifetime.I stick to one major priority per area of my life. I’ve categorized my life as follows: Career, health, learning, money, and relationships.That means I never work on more than one major project. I either write a book or create an online course. I also learn only one skill at a time. And I am either saving my money or am looking to invest it (naturally, I’m saving most of the time). For my health, I’m either building strength  or  endurance. And so forth.These categories are not based on anything but my own perspective on life. You can categorize your life any way you want. And you don’t need to criticize how others compartmentalize their lives. What matters is that we understand  howwe categorize our  own  lives. Otherwise, there’s no structure.And when there’s no structure. There’s chaos. And when there’s chaos, there’s no one thing: There’s  everything. That’s bad.Manage your desiresThe natural thing to do for most people is to start setting goals or picking one priority they want to focus on. But unless you have  t rained  your mind to focus on one thing, it’s not a smart thing to do.You must improve your focus muscle first.  Otherwise, you set a goal, focus on one thing, and get back to your old behavior within a week.You want to change your mindset. Go from “I want everything” to “I accept what I have.”That’s the only way to live this “one thing” idea. In other words, control your desires.I recommend practicing Mindfulness or Stoicism for that. Both philosophies talk extensively  about detaching ourselves from our desires. I think our excessive desire for more is the reason we can’t focus on one thing.Remove your desires, and you will have true freedom. The Stoic Epictetus  said it best in one of his classes  (as captured by his student, Arian):“Freedom is secured not by the fulfilling of men’s desires, but by the removal of desire.”If you manage your desire, you attack the problem at the core. In my experience, you CAN’T live a calm and focused life if you’re alw ays desiring more and new things.I have an article in which I share  Zen Buddhism principles,  and I have created a podcast series about  Stoic ideas. Look into those if you want to take control of your desires.All this doesn’t mean we shouldn’t desire to improve our lives. On the contrary, the whole purpose of life is to move forward. So don’t be afraid to set goals and aim for great things. Just achieve one thing after the other.Practice single-taskingNow, it’s time to practice. For the next week, only do ONE thing at a time. If you’re a modern human being that is used to technology, that will be very hard. But I guess you like the challenge, otherwise you wouldn’t be reading this. So try this: Go for a walk (or workout) without listening to music Put your phone in Do Not Disturb Mode for the whole day Don’t pick it up when you’re having a conversation When you are working, focus on a SINGLE task at a time In meetings, don’t check your email This is also called being present. Just be less distracted. That’s all. And you can practice with anything by doing only one thing.Time to set 1 goal per area of your lifeOnly after you have controlled your desires and practiced doing one thing at a time are you ready to apply the “One Thing” strategy to your life.The reason you want to practice is that life is long. If you take the time to become less distracted by desires, the more reliable you will become. You will become a person who does what they say. You will become a person who achieves what they set out.And after you start achieving one thing after the other, you will get momentum. Your job is to  keep  the momentum.This is how people become happy and wealthy. Both those things  add up  over time.Remember to keep the bigger picture in mind. You WILL achieve all your goals. Who cares whether you achieve them now or in the future? What matters is that you are not influenced by desire or outside forces. I certainly have thought this as I have read through acquaintances’ curated feasts on Instagram and friends’ documented Friday nights on Snapchat. A new study found that I’m not alone with this persistent worry.A Cornell University study led by Sebastian Deri found that across multiple populations, a universal social truth held true: Most of us think that other people are having richer and more active social lives than we are. From college students to mall shoppers the researchers interviewed, they found that respondents were rating their social lives as inferior to their friends, families, and acquaintances. No one was immune to the creeping sensation that everyone must be leading more exciting social lives than they were.This study aligns with previous research on our social anxieties. One  Harvard Business School study found that we worry that everyone is making more friends than us.
